Mike is currently an NED for Svyaznoy, the market-leading Russian mobile phone retailer. He has just finished 5 years as an NED for the Specialist Businesses Board of The Co-operative (Pharmacy, Funerals, E-Store, Travel Agents, Legal Services). Before leaving, Mike helped the old Group Board of the Co-op redesign the governance structures over the last year, following the much publicised failings at Group Board level and in the Bank. Mike’s NED career started in The Land Registry in 2005, where he served 3 terms and chaired the Remco. Mike has also served as an NED for NHS Hospitals in Lincolnshire where he created and chaired the Performance & Finance Committee of a struggling Trust.
Mike’s career has covered the Financial Services, Retail and Leisure sectors and included senior commercial roles prior to specialising in Board level HR 20 years ago. He is well known as an HR professional in the UK, having been Group HR Director for three FTSE 100 companies (B&Q, Boots and Thomas Cook) and served on the highest Executive Boards. Mike has been a regular feature in the HR world’s lists of most influential players and has won many industry awards for excellence and innovation in HR. He has a wealth of experience of successfully managing organizational change, including leading change programmes in the Mergers of Boots/Alliance Unichem in 2006 and Thomas Cook/MyTravel in 2008.
Mike is a Fellow of the Chartered Institute of Financial Services (formerly Chartered Institute of Bankers) and a Fellow of the Chartered Institute of Personnel and Development. He holds a degree from Exeter University and a post-graduate Diploma in Management Studies. Mike has qualified as a Coach on the highly regarded Henley programme.
